Overview Balin Garu is located about 50km northwest of Grafton, NSW. Address: 300 Gorge Road LILYDALE via COPMANHURST NSW 2460 Gorge Road is marked as Heifer Station Road on Google and some maps. To get Google Maps directions, click on the green marker on the right. Please call us ahead during or after times of heavy rainfall in the region as the Lilydale Bridge is often covered by flood waters. We can then advise whether to use the ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO LILYDALE below. The photo above shows the entrance to Balin Garu from Gorge Road. |

By Car Coming from the north there are 2 main ways to get to Grafton, either via the Pacific Highway or via Casino and then the Summerland Way. Generally we would recommend the Summerland way as it is an excellent road with very little traffic. From Casino From Casino, take the Summerland Way southwards. About 10 Km north of Grafton, turn off to the west onto the Clarence Way (your right), signposted “COPMANHURST”. Continue to Copmanhurst (about 20 Km – very small village with only a pub and post office/shop). Continue on through Copmanhurst and after exactly 10 Km turn off to the left on a road signposted “Jackadgery”, “Winegrove” and “The Gorge” (if coming after dark this turn off can be easy to miss so check your trip metre at Copmanhurst). Stay on the bitumen and after about 4 Km you will come to a low level bridge across the Clarence River, the Lilydale Bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge there is a T junction. Turn right into Gorge Road (gravel) and proceed 2.2 Km where on the right hand side of the road you will see our green letterbox marked 300. (Immediately above it is a sign pointing to the left saying “Lilydale Bypass” – it bypasses the bridge approaches in the event of major flooding). At the letterbox, turn right into our entrance. Again if you are coming after dark it can be easy to miss – we usually put a lamp on the gatepost if we know you are coming. The house is about 1.5 km from the gate. From Pacific Highway If coming via the Pacific Highway, north or southbound, there are 2 ways to get to us via Copmanhurst. The simplest route via South Grafton avoids the city of Grafton and involves travelling west along the Gwydir Highway (towards Glen Innes). About 6 km from South Grafton turn off to the right signposted “Copmanhurst” and follow the signs to Copmanhurst. Then proceed as above. Alternatively if you need to go into the city of Grafton you can reach Copmanhurst by traveling north via the Summerland Way towards Casino turning off to the left on the Copmanhurst Road about 10 Km north of Grafton. ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO LILYDALE This is an alternative route to “Balin Garu” via South Grafton, the Gwydir Highway and the Purgatory Creek Road when the route via Copmanhurst is not possible due to closure of the Lilydale Bridge due to flooding or bridge repairs. The starting point for this route is South Grafton. Travelling from Brisbane or Sydney, South Grafton is on the Pacific Highway. From Brisbane or Lismore, you can also get to South Grafton from Casino via the Summerland Way and Grafton. From South Grafton, take the Gwydir Highway heading towards Glen Innes. 30 Km west of South Grafton turn off to the right onto the Purgatory Creek Road (signposted “Lilydale”), a good gravel road suitable for ordinary cars. Follow Purgatory Creek Road for 8.7 Km to a T junction. Take the right hand fork (signposted “Lilydale”). Continue on for about 3 Km where the road becomes long, straight and flat. About another kilometer along there is a collection of cattle yards, farm outbuildings and an oldish Hardiplank house very close to the road on your left hand side. These are the first and only buildings that you will come to after leaving the Gwydir Highway. Here, a road goes off to the left signposted “Lilydale Bypass” immediately between the outbuildings and the Hardiplank house. Turn left onto the Lilydale Bypass (bypasses the flood prone Lilydale Bridge approaches) and continue for 2.3 Km until you reach a T junction which is Gorge Road. Our gate/grid and letterbox, both marked 300, are directly ahead of you at this junction. The gate will be open. Cross the grid leaving the gate open and follow our farm road 1½ Km to the house. Note: If you somehow miss turning left onto the Lilydale Bypass and continue straight ahead, you will come to a closed gate. If you open the gate and keep going, you will soon reach the western approach to the Lilydale Bridge. This is the start of Gorge Road. If you then continue 2.2 Km up Gorge Rd, our letterbox and gate will be on your right. From Glen Innes If coming from Glen Innes, use the Gwydir Highway and turn off onto the Purgatory Creek Road to Lilydale 30 Km to the west of South Grafton. Enjoy your trip. Watch out for kangaroos especially at dawn, dusk and at night. By air Regional Express has an excellent service to Grafton several times a day. We can arrange for pickup and transport to Balin Garu with advance booking. By bus & train Grafton is served by several bus companies and NSW Rail Countrylink. We would be pleased to provide transport from Grafton to Balin Garu by prior arrangement. |
